Tips to Achieve a Balanced Life
Life is a constant balancing act. There are always going to be challenges in life that have the potential to throw you off balance. It is possible to achieve and maintain a balanced life you just have to make the active decision to do so.
It is important to evaluate all the contributing elements to your life so you can achieve balance. The internal elements such as your mental and physical well being and the external elements such as your relationships, social life and work life.
Assess your life
Take a holistic look at your life. What is causing you stress? How are your important relationships? What do you wish you had more time for? Only YOU have the ability to make changes in your life so it is important to firstly understand what is making your life unbalanced.
Know your values
There are only 24 hours in a day so there is no benefit in trying to cram in 101 tasks and activities. Decide what you really value in life and what you want to be putting your time and energy into. Attempting to juggle too many activities at once often leads to disaster and unneeded stress. Know your priorities so you can focus on what really matters to you.
Take care of yourself
Make sure you are taking care of your physical wellbeing by keeping active and eating well. A good guide to maintaining a reasonable diet is the 80:20 rule, eat 80% foods that are nourishing for your body and 20% foods that are possibly not so nourishing. Forcing yourself to only eat ‘healthy’ foods can lead to binging when your cravings kick in. By using this rule you can keep a balance on your eating habits.
Make sure you are taking care of your mental well being also. Allow yourself time to relax and unwind, whether that involves working out, reading a book or listening to music. It may seem that this is wasted time in your busy life but allowing yourself a release will help to avoid burnout and rejuvenate you. This will make you more productive when you resume your tasks and activities.
In order to maintain a balanced life you must be organised and plan ahead. Having a calendar, planner or to do list can be helpful to assess your week and what you want to achieve in it. Consider upcoming events, meetings and appointments as well as allowing time to spend with your friends and family. Being organised and planning ahead will mean you are prepared for the upcoming week and how you will fit everything in.
Learn to accept uncertainty
Life is full of situations we can not control. Learning to accept uncertainty is beneficial as nobody knows what life has in store for you. Letting yourself get stressed in uncontrollable situations is unhelpful to you and anybody else involved. Learning to accept and deal with these situations in a constructive way will be more useful.
